Dedicated to all the soft spoken, knowledgeable, experienced, and modest (true) experts on all online forums I frequent – and those I don’t too.
Karl Popper is known for his attempt to repudiate the classical observationalist / inductivist account of scientific method by advancing empirical falsification instead, for his opposition to the classical justificationist account of knowledge which he replaced with critical rationalism. Popper coined the term critical rationalism to describe his philosophy. The term indicates his rejection of classical empiricism, and of the classical observationalist-inductivist account of science that had grown out of it. Popper argued strongly against the latter, holding that scientific theories are abstract in nature, and can be tested only indirectly, by reference to their implications. He also held that scientific theory, and human knowledge generally, is irreducibly conjectural or hypothetical, and is generated by the creative imagination in order to solve problems that have arisen in specific historio-cultural settings. Logically, no number of positive outcomes at the level of experimental testing can confirm a scientific theory, but a single counterexample is logically decisive: it shows the theory, from which the implication is derived, to be false. The term “falsifiable” does not mean something is false; rather, that if it is false, then this can be shown by observation or experiment.
You may be asking yourself at this point “What has this to do with choosing a kitchen knife?” well my friends – it has EVERYTHING to do withit. In this day and age it seems there are more and more knife forums out there populated by folks who find it appropriate to dispense advice and opinion on any number of given subjects – with absolutely NO PRIOR KNOWLEDGE about them. Kitchen cutlery is no exception. You will come across these “knife Gurus” on almost any online forum that engages in conversation about kitchen knives. These individuals are fairly easy to spot. Their “post count” i.e. the number of posts they have accumulated over time is usually mind boggling.
A closer look at these posts will usually reveal a trend: They are basing their “authoritative opinions” on nothing more than past annotations found on the very same forum they populate – many times, these past annotations are nothing other than their very own. These self anointed “Knife Gurus” usually portray themselves as “collectors” “connoisseurs” etc. and on the most part you will have to look pretty hard to find anyone in that crowd that calls himself “A Chef”, let alone provides any insight as to the actual cooking he does with the knives he so passionately discusses. In most cases I have encountered, it is simply a sad case of Graphomania (from Greek γραφειν — writing, and μανία — insanity), also known as scribomania, which refers to an obsessive impulse to write. Graphomania is near condition to typomania – obsessiveness with seeing one’s name in publication or with writing for being published, excessive symbolism or typology. However, outside the psychiatric definitions of graphomania and related conditions, the word is used more broadly to label the urge and need to write excessively, whether professional or not.
Online forums are a fertile breeding grounds for these Graphomanic self appointed Gurus. On the most part, they are simply harmless, pathetic individuals, with too much time, and far too little education for their own good. However, when these self appointed experts start to knock products they have absolutely no knowledge of- this is where the problem starts. Unsuspecting readers over these forums often look for expert advice and information about certain aspects of the subjects discussed. Our Graphomaniac Gurus cannot resist such a plea for help. After all – this is a perfect opportunity for them to see their name in print and jack up their post count while they are at it. Will their advice stain some one’s reputation? – who cares! are they providing the reader with information that will drag some one’s name in the mud and cost them their livelihood? – So what?! so long as they get to see their word in print.
Not very surprisingly, the real experts, having identified these Graphomanical frauds, will sail clear of such instances and threads, thus leaving the fraudulent information as is. I cannot blame them. If they try to say anything it will usually just end up in a huge argument between them and the “guru” who only see this as another opportunity to be vocal thus re-establishing his stance in the center of attention and his words in print.
One would think that the folks running and moderating these online forums would take the time to weed out these “experts” but regrettably this is not the case. Instead, they leave them to their shameful conduct and pseudo authoritative devices. The result is a HUGE amount of information that is simply unfounded, fraudulent, slanderous, and worst of all self perpetuating. The reason for this is that many times the moderators themselves the “self appointed Gurus” discussed here, and other times, while not being the active graphomaniacs themselves they are in a personal relationship with them which effectively renders them unfit to moderate their forums on any sort of rational and level headed ground. I can name names and quote quotes – but I won’t – it would only serve the purpose of the pathetic individuals I am referring to here. They know who they are.
So next time you hit the forums for any kind of information – remember to take any and all information offered to you there with a grain of salt. The person offering it may be a real expert – but he may also be a raving scribomaniac with no other purpose but self gratification of his “condition”.
